How to use a form with Shopify's Customer Accounts

How to use Customer Fields forms with Shopify's Customer Accounts

Customer Accounts replaces theme login and registration

When Shopify's Customer Accounts are enabled, Shopify completely replaces the theme's /account/login and /account/register pages with its own hosted passwordless login and registration flow.

Because these pages have been replaced by Shopify, they cannot be modified by themes or apps. However, Customer Fields fully supports Shopify's Customer account extensions, which allow you to add forms directly to the logged-in customer account pages with an Account/Checkout form. Additionally, Storefront forms can still be installed through an App block or Shortcode on any theme page.

Choosing an account type

Shopify has two customer account types: Customer Accounts (the current default) and Legacy Customer Accounts. New shops are set to Customer Accounts by default. As of early 2026, Shopify has deprecated Legacy Customer Accounts and will eventually remove them entirely. Merchants should plan to use Customer Accounts going forward.

Customer Accounts

Shopify's Customer Accounts offer a passwordless registration and login experience, hosted directly by Shopify. Users can register or log in on the site just by entering their email and an emailed passcode. Shopify supports Customer account extensions, which means that forms can be added directly to the Customer account pages to allow the collection and editing of custom information. However, note that extensions can only be added to the account pages after a customer has logged in or registered. The actual login and registration experiences cannot be customized directly.

If you are planning to use Shopify Plus' B2B features, this requires using Customer Accounts. To approve and onboard B2B customers, consider using our Onboard B2B app.

Using Customer Fields with Customer Accounts

Customer account extensions

Customer account extensions allow you to add Account/Checkout forms to the logged-in Customer Account pages and the Thank you page. Customer Fields adds five blocks to the customer account editor: Custom profile block, Custom profile page, Call to action banner, Notification card and Post-checkout form.

Storefront forms

Storefront forms can be installed on any page of your Shopify theme using an App block or Shortcode. This provides an additional registration path alongside Shopify’s native registration, allowing you to collect customer information during registration, or to be used as part of account approval workflows. Note that the Shopify-hosted registration page itself cannot be customized — see Access control below if ensuring form completion is critical.

Access control

When using Customer Accounts, customers will always be able to register directly by just entering their email and the emailed code, bypassing any forms installed to the theme. Depending on your use case, this may not be a problem, but if the site requires storefront restrictions or if it is critical for users to be approved or to specifically fill out the custom form, you may need to implement some sort of site restriction or access control based on criteria such as having a certain tag, which is only applied when they correctly submit the form.

Account approval emails

With Shopify's Customer Accounts, customers don't set a password. They sign in with their email and a one-time code. If your form uses Require account approval, the Application approved email links customers to your store to sign in, instead of asking them to activate an account.

For which emails each account option sends, and how to edit them, see Account options and Email templates.

Shopify's Legacy Customer Accounts (deprecated)

📌 Important

Shopify has deprecated Legacy Customer Accounts. Existing stores may still use them temporarily, but Shopify will remove this option in the future and has made the option unavailable for new stores. If your store currently uses Legacy Customer Accounts, you should plan to migrate to Customer Accounts.

Shopify's Legacy Customer Accounts are built directly into your theme, integrating the login, registration, and account experience with the rest of your site. The Customer Fields app was originally designed for use with this account type, and some features, such as replacing the default registration page and controlling access to account creation, work differently with Legacy Customer Accounts. However, because this account type is deprecated, it should not be used for new store setups or long-term configurations.
