If the need arises to add, remove, or change customer tags for a large number of customers, it's usually easiest to do so using a bulk process instead of individually editing each customer. Customer Fields does not have a bulk tag editor at this time, but it's entirely possible to update customer tags (or any other customer data) in bulk with the use of the app's Export and Import tools.
The process involves (A) exporting a list of customers that need their data updated, (B) updating the data column(s) in question by editing the CSV file, and then (C) re-importing the updated CSV file back into the app. This effectively will update the existing data for the customer with the values defined in the CSV.
Steps to update tags in bulk via CSV
For the purpose of this help article, we will be using an example use-case to update customer tags. We will be removing a tag called "OLD TAG", and replace it with a new tag called "NEW TAG".
Step 1 - Filter the customers
In the app's customer directory, you can use the app's filtering tools to look up a list of the customers who need their tags to be updated. In this example, we are filtering customers by tags
contains "OLD TAG" to pull up a list of all customers that use this tag, and we saved these results to a segment for easy access:
Step 2 - Export the list of customers to a CSV
Once you've filtered the customer list to the customers who need their tags updated, you can export the filter results to a CSV file. For the sake of simplicity, we have changed the selected data columns to just be first_name
, last_name
, email
, and tags
so that when we export, these are the only columns that will be included in the CSV file. See the screenshot below for an example:
Pro-tip: Check out our Export help article for more details if you are unfamiliar with exporting customer CSVs.
Step 3 - Update tags in the CSV file
Now that the customer list has been exported, we can update the 'tags' column in the CSV. It's important to pay attention to whether or not customers have more than one tag so that you only remove the correct tag.
Pro tip: To easily populate a large number of blank cells with data, select all the blank cells in the 'tags' column. Press F2 to edit the last selected cell and type your new tag. Press Ctrl
+ Enter
. All the selected cells will be filled with the tag that you typed into that last cell. ๐
Note: Make sure to save your changes to the CSV file before proceeding to the next step.
Step 4 - Import the updated CSV back into the app
Now that your tags have been updated in the CSV file, it's time to import the updated CSV back to the app by clicking 'Import' in the customer directory. You will want to double-check to make sure all columns in the CSV are mapped to the correct data columns in the app. Once the import process has completed, you can refresh your page to see the updated tags. ๐
