Automatically apply tags to your customers in Shopify in a variety of ways

Once you have created a form in Customer Fields, you might want the data from certain fields to appear as customer tags in Shopify. The app's form builder makes this task simple to enable, so you spend less time on setup and more time on running your business.

There are three ways to automatically tag customers using Customer fields:

  1. You can dynamically tag customers with the value they select when using a custom dropdown, dropdown with search, multi-choice list, or radio choices field (jump to section)

  2. You can tag all customers who fill out your form with a specific value. For example, all customers who submit your wholesale registration form could be tagged with wholesale (jump to section)

  3. You can tag select customers based on certain conditions you define (jump to section)

Automatically tag customers with the value they select from a custom dropdown, checkbox, or radio field

  • Launch the form builder by clicking the 'Edit' button from the Forms page in the app admin.

  • Click on the desired custom field that you would like to auto-tag. Please note that the auto-tag feature is only available for custom fields that are using the dropdown, dropdown with search, multi-choice list, or radio choices field type (learn why below).

  • The field editor will then appear for the field you've selected. In the field editor, scroll down to 'Choices.' Underneath the list of choices for the field, check the box that says 'Tag customer with selected value'.

  • Click the 'Save' button in the top right to save your changes.

  • Repeat these steps for another field if desired.

  • Once done, your customers will be automatically tagged with the value they choose for the field(s) that have the auto tag checkbox enabled 🙌

  • Note: If you are using separate labels/values for a field's options, then the value will be used for the tag, not the label

Automatically tag customers with a specific value

  • Launch the form builder by clicking the 'Edit' button from the Forms page in the app admin.

  • Once in the form builder, go to the 'Rules' tab. Click the 'Add rule' button to add a new form rule.

  • Do not add any conditions for the new form rule. Creating a rule with no conditions allows you to tag all customers who fill out this form once the form is submitted.

  • In the action section, select 'add tag to customer' and type in the desired value for the customer tag.

  • If you want to add multiple tags, simply click 'Add action' for the rule you're editing and repeat the last step.

  • Add a relevant name for your new rule, then hit the 'Save' button in the top right to save your changes.

  • Once done, customers will be automatically tagged with the value you’ve defined. Your customers will not be aware of the tag(s) used 👍

Tag customers based on certain conditions you define

  • Launch the form builder by clicking the 'Edit' button from the Forms page in the app admin.

  • Once in the form builder, go to the 'Rules' tab. Click the 'Add rule' button to add a new form rule.

  • Filter who you want to receive this tag by defining rule conditions. For example, if the user is from a certain US State, tag them with a region value you define.

  • Select the 'add tag to customer' action and type in the desired value for the customer tag.

  • Add a relevant name for your new rule, then hit the 'Save' button in the top right to save your changes.

  • Once done, customers will be automatically tagged with the value you’ve defined. Your customers will not be aware of the tag(s) used 👍

How does customer auto tagging work with account approval?

The process for customer auto tagging does not change whether or not you have account approval enabled on your form.

The app will only create a customer record in Shopify after you approve a pending customer, which means that denied customers will not receive a customer tag in Shopify.

When customers are approved, any customer tags added using rules will be added and synced with the customer record in Shopify.

Things to note

  • We have purposely omitted the ability to automatically tag customers with values from input and date fields since it's common for stores to use customer tags to control logic and/or pricing on the storefront. There could be cases where a customer types in a value or selects a certain date that ends up applying a tag to their account that gives them special access/pricing that they should not have gotten otherwise.

  • If you are simply wanting to display custom data in the Shopify admin, then we suggest taking a look at the app's customer note template editor.

  • Custom input fields and Form Rules are available on the Pro plan and above. You can learn more about form rules using this help article.
